01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Bukit Mertajam, Kafe Chiang Rai Station offers an inviting journey into authentic Thai cuisine that captures the vibrant flavors of Thailand without having to leave Pulau Pinang. This family-operated Thai restaurant serves up a delightful selection of classic dishes, each prepared with care and a touch of home-style tradition.

The menu shines with beloved staples such as creamy, aromatic Green Thai Curry, perfectly balanced with fragrant spices that play on the palate. Equally enticing are the shrimp cakes — golden, crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful within — and the satisfyingly rich tom yam soup that customers frequently praise for its perfect harmony of sour, spicy, and savory notes. Their fried egg dishes stand out as culinary gems too: wonderfully crispy edges give way to a fragrant, soft center, making each bite a comforting indulgence. From mixed vegetables to scrumptious omelettes, the variety ensures there is something for every taste bud, inviting both adventurous diners and those craving familiar flavors.

Though the space is modest, Kafe Chiang Rai Station’s air-conditioned interior creates a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for casual meals with family and friends. The local Thai-inspired decor quietly enhances the dining experience, making you feel as though you’ve been transported to a quaint eatery in Chiang Rai itself. It’s this blend of environment and authentic flavors that draws in both regulars and first-time visitors alike.

While the service can occasionally slow during busy dinner hours—likely due to the small, family-run nature of the operation—patience here is rewarded with quality food and genuine hospitality. Many diners recommend arriving early or reserving a table to avoid the evening rush, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable visit.

In terms of value, some patrons note that prices are slightly higher compared to other local Thai restaurants. However, the consensus is that the authentic taste, generous portions, and heartfelt cooking justify the modest premium. The overall experience feels more like dining at a cherished hidden gem than a typical restaurant.

For anyone craving a truly authentic Thai meal rich in flavor and crafted with love, Kafe Chiang Rai Station is a must-visit destination in Bukit Mertajam. The balance of genuine cuisine, cozy ambiance, and attentive yet unpretentious service makes it a memorable stop that lingers pleasantly long after the last bite.

Family-operated Thai restaurant with decent, slightly above-average food. Service may be slow at times because they appear to be understaffed.

Visited Cafe Chiang Rai Station with a group of 7 and had a generally good dining experience. We ordered a variety of classic Thai dishes including the fish, shrimp cakes, green curry chicken, mixed vegetables, and an omelette. The food quality was solid across the board—the green curry was creamy and flavorful, and the shrimp cakes had a great texture. It’s a good spot if you’re looking for authentic Thai flavors in Penang. In terms of value, I felt the price was slightly on the higher side for what we had. Our total bill for 7 people came to RM225. While the food was good, it’s something to keep in mind if you're on a strict budget. The restaurant has a nice, themed environment and the service was decent. It’s a great place for a family gathering or a group dinner if you don't mind paying a little extra for the setting and quality. Overall, a reliable choice for Thai food lovers!

A cozy little Thai restaurant tucked away in Bukit Mertajam. Though small, the air-conditioned space and local Thai-inspired interior create a comfortable dining environment. The food is flavorful—highly recommend the Green Thai Curry, which is rich in spices and very satisfying. Their fried egg series is also worth trying—crispy, fragrant, and delicious. However, the vegetable dishes were just average, possibly due to the absence of fish sauce to enhance the flavor. Overall, it’s a pleasant spot for a casual Thai dinner with family.

Authentic Thai food and cozy environment. A hidden gem in downtown BM. Downside is long queue time easily 30-45 min wait during dinner but hey it’s worth the wait. Advisable to come early or call to make reservation in advance.
